Dee Caffari: The Vendee Globe
Congratulations to Dee on becoming the first woman ever to sail solo around the world non-stop in both directions.
Dee, in a BBC breakfast television interview on the 18th Feb, answered a question about the “brilliant communications systems” by responding - “they’ve really developed and it’s fantastic to be able to bring the race and the adventure to everybody sat at home as well, so we can actually share it a lot more... “
Dee has been using Livewire’s M-Link technology for conducting live television interviews from mid ocean and also for sending back store & forward video off the yacht for use on the Vendee Globe website and TV broadcast. The M-Link software compresses the video and manages the file transfer to make the most efficient use of the 128kb satellite link provided by the Inmarsat Fleet 77 terminal which is fitted on Aviva.
Dee is no newcomer to using this technology, in December 2007 she contributed to the opening of Whyte and Mackay Earls Court Boat Show by welcoming visitors of the show live from a large screen, whilst sailing in the 8th edition of the Transat Jacques Vabre Race.
Dee Caffari is not the only competitor in the Vendee Globe to be using Livewire’s equipment; five out of the six of the British competitors were equipped with M-Link technology.
