Makalu 2010 - Joint Services Mountaineering Expedition

In March a team of eight mountaineers from across the British Armed Forces undertook an expedition to the Himalayas. They made an attempt on the worlds 5th highest mountain, Makalu. The plan was to ascend the S.E. Ridge and then make a complete traverse of the mountain. The length of the ridge, technical difficulty, altitude and distance between camps meant that it was always going to be a supreme test.

The servicemen’s compelling story was told as it unfolded, by means of video pieces and a blog which were transmitted via satellite from the base camps.

There was a requirement by the team to get video into the Defence News Imagery Pool for distribution on a local and national terrestrial news agency basis. Livewire Digital Ltd installed M-Link Newscaster on the team's laptops to enable this functionality. Livewire also worked closely with the expedition team and with VISLINK to enable and test the onward delivery of video from the mountain to the base camps.

Livewire's M-Link products include solutions for the delivery of live and file based video. They include HD capability and products are available for both Windows and Mac OS X platforms.
