Research and Development

Livewire Digital’s in-depth expertise in terrestrial, satellite and wireless communications has resulted in a range of R&D contracts being awarded for software & hardware, technical assessments and studies.

Recent R&D assignments have included the following:

  • The BGAN Protocol Tester (BPT) is the integrated development and test environment for the verification of the 3rd generation mobile satellite systems. Incorporating fully verified 3GPP TTCN test suites, the BPT is currently being used to develop the Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN) being developed by Inmarsat, Hughes, Nera, Thrane & Thrane, AddValue Technologies and many leading tier-1 carriers.

  • The development of E-mail middleware tools, which provide users with up-front cost and access control of their E-mail Clients, detailed information on the effectiveness of the dial-up and IP-connections, and optimised throughput.

  • The analysis and prototyping of non-SIM based authentication procedures for the accountable use and deployment of rapid response communications infrastructure.

  • The independent evaluation and feasibility study of a technical proposal for the provisioning of full carrier-grade, on-demand ISDN services for a global maritime platform.

  • A range of guidelines for the deployment of optimised web technologies for use with narrow-band communication links.

  • The commercial assessment of high-value deployment scenarios for “pay-as-you-go” and subscription IP-services for operational and social communications in the Merchant Navy, Cruise Lines, Humanitarian and Disaster Relief, Trains, and Construction Industry. The assessment included the technical evaluation of an integrated platform designed around mobile, wireless, and satellite IP-communications.
