Velux 5 Oceans - video reports from mid-ocean.
On 17th October, five skippers set sail in Eco 60’s from La Rochelle to compete in the longest solo, round the world yacht race: The Velux 5 Oceans.
Onboard media equipment, to enable their story to be told from mid ocean, includes Livewire’s market leading video delivery software – M-Link Voyager. The software is capable of transmitting both store & forward and live video using an advanced industry standard H.264/AVC video codec. M-Link Voyager features include; highly optimised transmission protocols, automatic appending and integral BGAN control.
As ease of use was a priority, Marine Camera Solutions (media solutions provider for the race), requested some custom modifications to the software to allow just two encoding profiles to be used, one for transmission of web quality video (512Kbps) and one for broadcast quality video transmission (1.5Mbps)
The skippers are currently sending back 2-3 minutes of video per week to North One Television for display on the Velux 5 Oceans website, watch the clips here. This is to be complemented after the first leg with some live interviews with major broadcasters.
