Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012
On Board Media Equipment
The four cameras mounted above decks on each yacht have been designed to withstand the harshest environment with no compromise to the optics. Livewire Digital HD cameras feature flat sapphire glass windows rather than a dome to avoid image distortion and internal reflections. The cameras incorporate HD wide angle lenses, are day/night capable and and offer all the features expected from a professional camera head.
The latest media system offers a range of solutions for audio capture, which of these is used will depend on the weather conditions and the audio requirement. Equipment includes fixed waterproof microphones, a professional gun microphone and a talkback system.
The carbon fibre hub integrates the onboard hardware (cameras, microphones, satellite terminals, microwave etc.) using a series of software applications to enable video and audio acquisition, recording and delivery of media to race office.
This is achieved by the MCM selecting from a number of pre-defined workflows, this configures the underlying equipment and A/V routing automatically, so that the user can concentrate on the media objective rather than the underlying technology.
Livewire Digital has developed a sophisticated delay line technology for the 2011-2012 race, which can now hold a history of up to 3hrs.
When a crash event occurs, either as a result of pre-defined telemetry (such as a capsize or other sudden event) or a crew member hitting any of the crash record buttons, the Delay Line has been configured to record the previous 4 minutes and subsequent 4 minutes of video and audio.
