UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), through its innovation agency Innovate UK, is the national public funding body backing UK participants in the CELTIC-NEXT programme. This collaboration funds the international telecommunications R&D initiative, SafeRoute-6G.
The SafeRoute-6G Project
SafeRoute-6G is a flagship international, industry-driven R&D project operating under the CELTIC-NEXT umbrella.
- Direct Investment: UKRI provides direct financial grants to UK organisations participating in the project, including the Satellite Applications Catapult (SAC) and University College London (UCL).
- Core Objective: The consortium develops cross-border telecommunications solutions to improve traffic safety and road efficiency.
- Key Technologies: The initiative leverages real-time sensor data, connected vehicles, and 6G communication protocols.
The UKRI and CELTIC-NEXT Partnership
- Financial Backing: UKRI funds UK-based SMEs, universities, and industry partners within international CELTIC-NEXT consortia to develop next-generation ICT and 6G technologies.
- The Funding Process: Project proposals are first submitted to CELTIC-NEXT for evaluation. Following approval, UK partners apply directly to Innovate UK to secure national grant funding.
